Carmona City Charter Day

Carmona City Charter Day is celebrated in the city of Carmona, Cavite, Philippines every February 23. It commemorates the transformation of then town of Carmona to a component city in 2023.

Carmona City also celebrates the Sorteo Festival.

History of cityhood of Carmona

Cavite 5th District Representative Roy Loyola authored the bill for the cityhood of Carmona in House Bill No. 3968 filed on August 23, 2022. It was reported in 2023 that he advocated for its cityhood for 12 years. The bill was approved on September 5, 2022 and transmitted to the Senate the day after. Senator Ramon Revilla filed the corresponding bill in the Senate.

Prior to its cityhood, Carmona was regarded as first-class urban municipality. It was considered the richest city in the country with a total asset of P6.212 billion in 2021. It had a population of 106,256 according to a 2020 census.

On February 23, 2023, Republic Act No. 11938, An Act Converting the Municipality of Carmona in the Province of Cavite into a Component City to be Known as the City of Carmona, was signed into law. The law is also known as Charter of the City of Carmona. The date is the basis of the yearly charter day celebration.

A plebiscite was held on July 8, 2023, which was declared a holiday in order to give the electorate time to cast their votes. Carmona had a total of 58,691 registered voters. The result saw 30,363 voting yes, and 1,016 voting no. The Commission on Elections proclaimed the turn-out favorable of the plebiscite, enacting the law and converting Carmona to a city.

It became the 8th city in the province, joining Bacoor, Cavite, Dasmariñas, General Trias, Imus, Tagaytay, and Trece Martires. It also became the 149th city in the Philippines.

In addition, its cityhood was the first under Republic Act No. 11683 that amended the Section 450 of Republic Act No. 716. According to RA 11683, application to become a city require minimum annual income of P400 million and a population not less than 100,000 people.

Carmona City Charter Day Activities

In 2024, Carmona celebrated its first charter day in February 19, a Monday with a week-long calendar for an opening program, float, grand parade attended by organizations, schools, and local government units. Its calendar spanned for a week that included events such as talent contest, job fair, Little Miss Carmona.

Another highlight is the Gawad Latag (Latag was the old name of Carmona) which is an award given as a recognition to top taxpayers, top entities with corporate social responsibility, and non-government organizations.
