Araw ng Talakag, which translates to Talakag Day, is also called Talakag Founding Anniversary and celebrated in the municipality of Talakag, Bukidnon, Philippines every March 19. The date may be a special holiday through issuances such as the Proclamation No. 684 in 2019.
History of Talakag
Talakag is considered highlanders’ golden paradise of Bukidnon. Its previous name was Kalabangasan owing to the numerous balangas (rambutan) trees found in the area. It was renamed to what it is known today, a name that refers to a tendency to make a chase.
Its municipal status was affirmed by the passage of Act No. 2711 on March 10, 1917 under the Department of Mindanao and Sulu. Section 42 Article III of the act stated, “The Province of Bukidnon consists of territory in the northern part of the Island of Mindanao between the Province of Agusan, to the east, and the Provinces of Oriental Misamis and Lanao to the west, with Cotabato to the south, and comprises the following municipalities: Impasugong, Malaybalay (the capital of the province), Maluko, and Talakag.”
In 1966, parts of its lands and of Malaybalay separated in order to form the municipality of Lantapan. This was made possible through the enactment of Republic Act No. 4787, otherwise known as “An Act Creating the Municipality of Lantapan in the Province of Bukidnon.”
Araw ng Talakag Activities
In 2023, activities for Araw ng Talakag began in March 16 with a thanksgiving mass and basketball tournament. Opening activities began officially the next day. Events lasted until March 23 and they include beauty pageants (Binibining Talakag, Miss Queen Talakag), sports, talent contests, cultural presentations, live bands, concerts, parade, entertainment, comedy shows, agri-fair and food bazaar, competitions, Laro ng Lahi, fireworks display, etc.
How to reach Talakag, Bukidnon
You can reach Bukidnon via Cagayan de Oro City Airport and take the bus in a trip that might take anywhere between three and four hours.
