History of Dagkot Festival

Dagkot Festival was launched during the administration of Mayor Dale Corvera in 2008.

Devotion to Our Lady of Candles

Dagkot Festival is an expression of faith and devotion to Our Lady of Candles, the patroness of Cabadbaran City and titular of the Virgen de la Candelaria Parish Church.

The devotion began during the spread of Christianity in northern Mindanao in Spanish colonial times. Cabadbaran was one of the locations in Mindanao that fell under foreign rule.

The Spaniards claimed a stake in this part of Agusan and named it La Reunion de Cabarbaran in 1867. In accordance to the systematized organization of colonial settlements, it was made into a reducciones until it was dissolved in 1879. People returned to their place of origin while others moved to Tubay.

Fr. Saturnino Urios re-established the settlement in between 1880 and 1881. He renamed it to Tolosa after his hometown in Spain. With the colonial government in place that came with the appointment of teniente del barrio in the person of Eduardo Curato, it was made into a town on January 31, 1894.

The Virgen de la Candelaria Parish was established in November 17, 1913.
