Panumod Festival

Panumod Festival is a cultural and religious festival in the municipality of Barili, Cebu, Philippines. It is organized to celebrate the livestock market of the town and held annually every July 26 in time with the festival of St. Anne, the patroness of the town.

It is one of the cultural fests in Pasigarbo sa Sugbo.

Etymology

Panumod Festival comes from the word tumod, which is Cebuano word for delivery. In the context of the festivity, it is the act of moving livestock to be sold in the market. The trading that takes place between buyers and sellers in the market is called tabo.

History of Panumod Festival

For years, the town of Barili staged Kaumahan Festival which debuted in 2008 during the mayoral term of Teresito Marinas. Its name comes from the root word uma or farming, while the word kaumahan means field or farmland. It is a festive expression of gratitude for bountiful harvest and promotion of local products.

Panumod Festival replaced Kaumahan Festival on July 26, 2024, coinciding the 410th religious festival. It is a celebration of livestock trading that has become a source of livelihood and invigorated the local economy. Its livestock market every Tuesday in Mantalongon is considered the largest in the entire Visayas, and it is also a flourishing marketplace for fruits and vegetables.

Devotion to St. Anne

Augustinian missionaries planted the seeds of Christianity in Barili during the Spanish conquest. In 1604, they established a mission station. A decade past and it became a parish in 1614.

The church, dedicated to the patroness St. Anne, was the matriz (mother parish) of the churches in the town of Pinamungajan to Samboan. It was one of the three parishes under the administration of the secular clergy, the other two being Parian and Bantayan.

Its early place of worship must had been made of humble building materials that was susceptible to fire. A stone church was built by the river, however it was flooded whenever the river rose and did not survive from the onslaught of natural calamities.

Towards the end of the 19th century, Carlos Alquizola donated the lot that the present-day church stands. The church was constructed in 1889 during the time of Fr. Juan Alcoseba (who served until 1910).

It was declared an archdiocesan shrine on July 24, 2005.

Activities of Kaumahan Festival

Kaumahan Festival has a full calendar that included both religious and secular activities such as novena prayers, Holy Mass, parade, street dance, ritual dance competitions, and beauty pageant.

From Mactan International Airport, take the bus or cab to South Bus Terminal and then take a bus bound for Barili.
